A Portable Home: Nomadic Life in the 21st Century

I recently discovered and became fascinated with a portable home designed by the ÁBATON architecture studio. I started to imagine a nomadic life, much like the old gypsy communities led, yet with all the technology and comforts of the 21st century.

This portable home has received multiple awards and considerable recognition, including the Architizer A+ Awards 2014 in the Architecture+Living Small and Single Family House XS categories. The home, christened ÁPH80, is a true wonder, a project developed from a vision of a new kind of life, infused with harmony and environmental balance, the dream of a simple life in tune with nature.

An ideal home for two people, the house offers three separate spaces, the living room and kitchen area, fully equipped with a gas or ceramic electric stove top, refrigerator, sink and extractor hood, a full bathroom with shower, and the bedroom, all in just 290 sq feet, with an apex roof reaching 11.5 ft at its highest point.

The ÁPH80 portable home draws inspiration from and aspires after architectural principles such as wellbeing, environmental balance and simplicity, while inviting the dweller to enjoy the home from a new perspective.

The materials employed, most of which are recyclable, meet all the sustainability criteria that ÁBATON applies to all its projects. The wood used on the home is always sourced from regulated forests in order to prevent uncontrolled logging, and transmits a sense of comfort. It is an essential, and 100% natural aspect of the home.

The proportions of the portable home by ÁBATON provide a perfect sensation of a complete and pleasant indoor environment. In addition to being an impeccable architectural achievement, the Madrid interior design team has put the emphasis on quality and an eye for detail, from the very start of the project.

Would you be prepared to live as a 20th century nomad?
