The reconversion of a small Victorian house in Melbourne

On the other side of the world in Australia, we discovered this fabulous residence, a small Victorian house that has been recently renovated by the design studio Pipkorn & Kilpatrick, transforming it into a living area for four people—a local family who are already enjoying their new house and the changes that have turned it into a real home, to be enjoyed and shared.

This Victorian house, located in the North Fitzroy neighborhood of Melbourne, originally had only one bedroom on the upper floor, which greatly limited its possibilities as a family home. The reconversion envisioned by the architecture and design studio included the removal of a wall on the ground floor to create a daytime area, where the living room, dining room, and kitchen would be found. These areas are connected by means of large entryways that enable the natural light from the small but exquisite courtyard to stream into the rooms, illuminating them all. To achieve this, the small windows facing the rear courtyard were replaced with larger windows that afford extremely pleasant views.

On the upper floor of this Victorian house in North Fitzroy, a lightweight structure was added to properly distribute the available floor space, creating a master bedroom with en suite bathroom which opens out to a terrace, a bedroom for two small children, and a study. A highly intricate and carefully studied addition, adding architectural value to this small home.

Wood takes center stage while designing the relaxed and cozy areas in an environment with certain Nordic and industrial touches, such as the polished cement countertop that spans the entire kitchen surface and the bathroom cladding. In the courtyard, the original red brick flooring of this Victorian house perfectly blends with the earth and grass of the garden.
