Ferm Living, day-to-day inspiration

Ten years ago, in my native Denmark, I discovered a small graphic design study which soon became one of the world’s references in the decoration sector: Ferm Living.

The idea came from Trine Andersen, the author and driving force of the brand’s products. After a frustrating search for desk material with the graphic image she needed, she decided to create her own designs. The first collection of coloured papers came out in February 2006. The general public’s response to Trine’s proposals was enthusiastic and now a wide, never-ending, variety of decorative products can be found all around the world.

“The name ‘ferm’ was actually inspired by my grandmother. When she said she was ‘ferm På fingrene’, in other words good with her hands (literally ‘good with her fingers’), it was a great compliment. I like to think that she would approve of the Ferm Living range”, says Trine.

In fact, the products proposed by Ferm Living have always been based on Trine’s own life experiences and needs. “The Ferm Living designs have always been based on my own life. The first screen background was created because I couldn’t find the clear-cut design type I was looking for. So I simply decided that if I wanted a specific graphic style I might also want other elements, and I made the decision to create the brand. We later became parents and, faced with that situation, I began to design children’s rooms. After that we found ourselves needing new things for the house, because we had moved into a larger, loft-style home. Day-to-day life is my inspiration.”

Ferm Living is based on Scandinavian traditions mixed with a retro charm, with distinctive graphic strokes which turn each element into a contemporary piece.

The range of Ferm Living products includes pieces of furniture and accessories for each of the rooms in a home: textiles, coloured papers, accessories for the office, the kitchen and the bathroom and a wonderful children’s collection. The materials used comprise sustainable and organic elements, one of the clear preferences of the Danish company’s creator, with organic cotton, recycled paper, wood, porcelain, leather and metal, among others.
