De Kas Restaurant: Organic Food in a Greenhouse

Where to Eat in Amsterdam

At the corner of Middenweg and Kamerlingh Onneslaan, in Frankendael Park, we discovered De Kas Restaurant, a charming place located in a set of greenhouses built in 1926, amidst the Rembrandt Tower and the 19th-century facades of Watergraafsmeer in Amsterdam.

It is a genuine culinary destination that uses locally sourced ingredients, products grown in its own garden and the best-quality seasonal produce as the key elements to enjoy a delicious lunch or dinner in a quiet and relaxed setting.

One of the best and most acclaimed Dutch chefs, Gert-Jan Hagerman, decided to steer his professional career in a different direction after being awarded a Michelin star. He carried out a respectful and exquisite restoration of the building, which was about to be demolished.

At present, Gert-Jan dedicates a large amount of his time and energy in managing De Kas Restaurant, aside from personally looking after the nurseries that supply the restaurant’s kitchen, working the land, sowing and harvesting the best fruits, vegetables and leafy greens with which to create the best dishes. The rest of the produce that cannot be grown in the restaurant’s own gardens are planted in the Beemster region, which is approximately 10 kilometers from the Dutch capital.

Aside from offering excellent cuisine, De Kas Restaurant stands out for its beautiful interiors, a project undertaken by Piet Boon, a world-renowned Dutch designer. The magnificence of the 8-meter-tall greenhouse is brought to the fore—exuding warmth—, thanks to the selection of furniture and accessories that help in creating a very contemporary and cozy atmosphere.
