The San Miguel Market, gastronomic abundance paired with history

MERCADO-DE-SAN-MIGUEL

In one of the purest and authentically Spanish areas of Madrid, we happen upon one of the city’s most traditional markets, located in a historic and monumental spot, but that has been redesigned to embrace a new gastronomic concept. The aim being to bring together the very best merchants, professionals, experts and enthusiasts in their respective fields to form the San Miguel market.

I was given the chance to explore this market during one of my longer stays in the Spanish capital, while enjoying the city and seeking out the perfect location for my luxury apartments and suites in Madrid. A truly top-notch discovery that since then I always include as one of my points of interest for the city.

Considered a “Bien de Interés Cultural” or heritage of cultural interest under the Monuments category, the market sits in the San Miguel plaza, built by Alfonso Dubé y Díez, a Spanish architect known for having designed various Madrid buildings. Construction of the market finished in 1916.

The San Miguel market is the only iron market that still remains intact, following the demolition and reconstruction of the also once-formidable La Cebada and Los Mostenses markets.

Thanks to the transformation that has taken place over recent years, the market has become a reference point for thousands of Madrid residents and tourists who visit it. Here they joyfully partake in the gastronomic and cultural offerings that the San Miguel market provides, yet without it having lost the traditional purpose of the market, centered around daily shopping.

The very best merchants, professionals, experts and enthusiasts in their respective fields are concentrated into a space just over 13,000 sq feet, as part of the response to the growing interest in the world of gastronomy and the quality of the products it offers. It is an essential meeting point focused on the customer, the professional and the gourmand.
