Matadero Madrid: a center for contemporary creation

On June 21st, 1911, construction of Madrid’s old cattle market and slaughterhouse (matadero) began. The project was developed by Rioja-born architect Luís Bellido and structured around a set of pavilions characterized by their structural rationality, functionality and conceptual simplicity. The facilities operated until 1996, when the complex was closed down.

In 2007 it was reconverted into the multicultural space Matadero Madrid, a large, contemporary creation lab. In the same experimental spirit that originally gave birth to the complex, renovation work was developed in a flexible architectural style, using industrial materials to maintain the facilities’ original character.
