Fundació Joan Miró, avant-garde and surrealism in Barcelona

Barcelona is home to one of the most important spaces disseminating the works of one of the major artists of surrealism, Joan Miró i Ferrà, a project designed by himself in 1975 in the Parc de Montjuïc, the Fundació Joan Miró.

This culture and arts center, housed in an extraordinary rationalist building, was conceptualized by Josep Lluís Sert, a Catalan architect who worked with the brilliant Le Corbusier, designing the space in close cooperation with Miró himself. The artist’s own private collection was used as the cornerstone to create a world-renowned venue for contemporary art and the works of Joan Miró, in the city where he was born.

The artistic career of Joan Miró, born in Barcelona in 1893, has been clearly influenced by the places he visited in his lifetime, among which Mont-Roig, Paris, Mallorca, New York, and Japan stand out, whose landscapes have left an indelible mark on his works, turning him into one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.

Among the most outstanding works to be found at the Fundació Joan Miró are the oil painting on canvas Mujer y pájaros al amanecer (Woman and birds at dawn) from 1946, the Payés catalán al claro de luna (Catalan peasant farmer under the moonlight) from 1968, and the acrylic painting on canvas Personaje delante del sol (Celebrity in the sun) also from 1968. Innumerable other priceless masterpieces created in the course of Miró’s artistic career, in sculpture, pottery, drawings, fabrics, and sketches can also be found.
