What to Visit-Barcelona
Barcelona has a unique historical site, a center for collective memory and a genuine cultural icon of the 21st century in El Born Cultural and Memorial Center.
Located in the former El Born Market—the first large-scale cast-iron architecture building in Barcelona, dating from 1876—, El Born Cultural and Memorial Center is home to an archaeological site which is key to the history of the Catalan capital. It holds the remains of houses in the La Ribera neighborhood of Barcelona in 1700 which were demolished during the War of the Spanish Succession to build the military fortress of Ciutadella, now one of the city’s most important parks.
El Born Market served as a neighborhood market for more than 40 years. Beginning 1920, it was used as a central market for fruits and vegetables for the city, and this went on until 1971, when the wholesale market of Mercabarna in the Zona Franca area was inaugurated.
The building, an example of cast-iron architecture, was built in the modernist artistic style—one of the most popular and internationally renowned—, in the city of Barcelona.
Listed as a Local Cultural Heritage Site, the former El Born Market is now home to El Born Cultural and Memorial Center, after the discovery of the archaeological remains in February 2002, while carrying out works to turn the building into the Provincial Library of Barcelona.
Don’t miss out on a visit to El Born CCM, which offers visitors a space in remembrance of the events that happened during the War of the Spanish Succession and of the site itself in 1714, a significant date in the history of the city and Catalonia.
What’s more, at El Born CCM you’ll discover a veritable cultural market which includes different types of activities and schedules of literary, musical and theater events—a great cultural center that is of the utmost importance for both residents and tourists alike.
