Dos Palillos, a true experience for the senses in Barcelona

Barcelona is a city that never ceases to amaze—for its weather, personality, culture, architecture, design, and last but not the least, for its inimitable culinary offerings. Restaurants such as Dos Palillos, which offers fusion cuisine with strong Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Thai influences, among others, bring faraway flavors closer to home.

Dos Palillos is found in Casa Camper Barcelona, right in the heart of the city’s tourist district, on a narrow street in the El Raval neighborhood, very near bustling Ramblas. Dos Palillos, created by Albert Raurich—former executive chef of the world-renowned El Bulli—is a distinctly original concept offering authentic Asian dishes served Spanish tapas style.

This famous restaurant gets its name from the fact that both Oriental and Spanish cultures use sticks to eat with, albeit of different types. While in Asian countries they are used as tongs to lift small portions of food to the mouth, in Spanish bars, sticks are ever-present elements of tapas.

The restaurant is divided into two well-differentiated areas: off to one side is the tapas bar, where the different tapas prepared à la carte can be sampled, and off to another side is the Asian bar, its true heart and soul, set up as a bar counter around the open kitchen, where the two tasting menus—“Dos Palillos” and “Dos Palillos Festival”—are served.

Some outstanding dishes, such as the Fresh algae and mollusk sunomono, presented as an abstract painting on a stone platter, is a delight from the very first bite, exquisite and bursting with flavor, the Demi-cooked shrimps in tea oil, and the Flame-grilled Delta de l’Ebre oysters with sake… are just simply delicious!

A true experience for the senses for those who, like me, just can’t get enough of Oriental cuisine.
